Barandat

for brass quintet

Barandat means a thin wall that is capable of supporting little weight. This composition is a reflection on the different obstacles that arise along the way, the walls that form when encountering them, and the energy received when overcoming them. The work exposes and develops a main theme, whose pitches are extracted by association from the letters of the title, Barandat (B A, D A G, D A F). After a brief energetic introduction where the main theme is presented, the composition is structured into two large sections. The first section, Slow – Moderate, is inspired by the cautious movement of Myrtle, a large green sea turtle who was rescued and rehabilitated at the New England Aquarium in Boston, where she now lives and advances on her path to recovery, avoiding obstacles. The second section, Presto, builds a fast speech from the fragmented thematic elements, developing the main theme, and incorporating some secondary rhythmic elements.
