Sambori

for brass quintet and wind ensemble

Composition for brass quintet inspired by the hopscotch children’s game (sambori in Catalan). The main musical idea is the sambori theme, based on the metric and patterns of the 10 squares in the hopscotch court. This theme is combined with motives from Torna-li la trompa al xic, a popular children’s song from Valencia about the peg game. The musical elements are introduced at first as a chorale by the soloists and developed later with traditional textures like accompanied melody, canonic imitation, and parallelisms. To play this game you must play four turns (movements) attacca.

Composition for a symphonic band inspired by the story of a Valencian family of fishermen as told by writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez in his book of the same name.

Commissioned by CulturArts (Generalitat Valenciana) as the mandatory piece at the Valencia State Wind Ensemble Competition (2016)

Foundations

for tuba and wind ensemble

Concerto for tuba and wind ensemble inspired by three foundational geometric figures. The first movement, Cube, is based on groups of four, and equal square presences. The second movement, Sphere, is based on the circle of fifths and round shapes. The third movement, Pyramid, is based on groups of three and triangular pitch shapes.
